What's New...

Hi there and welcome to my pawsome ‘Annual Review’ news report. August 2007 to July 2008 has seen a massive decrease in new members joining the club. In spite of this there has been a massive increase in participation in the Cross Country & Track & Field disciplines which is very encouraging. However in the Fell Running we did have a slight decrease in numbers taking part which is a bit disappointing. In the 2008 Ken Smith Junior Fell Champs series 16 young hounds have taken part so far. At the Winter WY Cross Country League 38 young athletes took part and at the summer WY Track & Field League there were 38 juniors. The Yorkshire Champs saw 16 competitors run at Huddersfield for the Cross country and 24 running, jumping & throwing at The Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield for the Track & Field. At the North Of England Champs 19 ran at the Cross Country in Leeds and 10 juniors took part in the Track & Field. Last but not least we had 6 athletes representing their county at the English Schools Cross Country Champs held in Liverpool and 8 athletes representing their county at the English Schools Track & Field Champs held in Gateshead. We hope to see a lot more young hounds wearing the Bingley Harriers vest next year in all athletic disciplines.  Keep Running, Jumping & Throwing with the Young Hound’s because were the best. Enjoy your athletics – I do!

CD TRACKSTAR

In the early months of 1991 an idea was born at a RAF Cosford Indoor Athletics meeting. Many Bingley Harriers both junior and senior were competing and during one of the breaks a discussion took place. The outcome was the suggestion that Bingley Harriers should have an indoor (Sportshall Athletics) Pulton Cup. An anonymous sponsor donated the trophy and the event was born. Each athlete competes in running, jumping and throwing and the total points scored are then calculated to give age group winners and an overall winner. The inaugural winner of the competition was none other than Joanne Oates who is still competing for the club. There was a new trophy added in 1993 to cater for the under 9's and Under 11's, consequently there are now 2 trophies to be contested each spring. The competition is still enthusiastically attended and long may it remain.

The August Young Hound of the Month is Phillipa Medley.

During the month of August Phillipa competed for Bingley at the North of England League match (4) held at the brand new Leigh Sporting Village. She competed in the Senior Ladies High Jump, Long Jump and 100m Sprint and came away with two first places and a 3rd place. Phillipa’s performances helped gain ‘Team Bingley’ promotion to Division Two. Phillipa’s next competition in the month of August was at the North of England Cup match (round one) held at Stanley Park in Blackpool. Phillipa competed in the Senior Ladies High Jump and Long Jump gaining valuable team points with a 2nd and 3rd place which helped ‘Team Bingley’ to qualify for the Cup Final at The City of Manchester Stadium. Phillipa’s last competition of the month was at the North Of England Inter Counties match in Hull where she represented Yorkshire in the U17 Ladies High Jump and came a very creditable 3rd place.
Well done Phillipa – hope you have enjoyed your first season of ‘Senior’ Track & Field Athletics with Bingley Harriers.
