Junior Fell Championship 2008
The final race of the Ken Smith Bingley series was the English Junior Championship at Lordstones on the North Yorkshire Moors, run in conjunction with the senior Viking Chase. It was a beautiful sunny day with microlights overhead and great views over the Vale of York. However, not for the first time, there was considerable potential for confusion with the organisers changing race times and routes for the differing age groups and this resulted in Ben Marriott missing the start of his race. The races themselves, though, seemed to go well with good running from Sam Convery, James Hall and Nicole Narey. The last races of the BOFRA series are Embsay on Sunday 28th September and Wasdale on Saturday 11th October.

Shepherd's Skyline

Peter Jagan at Withins
2008 Champion Peter Jagan at Withins

21 runners from Bingley joined the massive turnout at the Shepherd’s Rest pub for the Shepherd’s Skyline Fell Race. The starting horn started what was more like a stampede than a fell race for the first couple of minutes, then we settled in to the normal conditions of mud, rain, mud, wind and a bit more mud. Holmsey collected the winner’s trophy, Andy Jebb was 21st and Andy Nicoll was 27th.
The points have been counted, and I can confirm that that the winners of the Bingley Harriers Fell Championship – 2008 are. . . . Peter Jagan - overall, Sharon Smith – ladies, Simon Wright – V40s and Peter Jagan – over 50s. Well done, especially Peter who now has his name on the V50 cup 5 times.
So that’s it for this year, but there will be no rest for the aspiring champions of 2009. Mike Smith is selecting the races. Plans are being hatched, secret training regimes are being implemented, spiritual guidance is being sought, gurus are being consulted, and new footwear is being assessed (and that’s just in my house).
But remember, if you are seeking glory next year you have to turn up to at least eight championship races to have any chance, and history has shown that twelve out of twelve is even better.
